Turbos and superchargers are only simple to those who know how they work
and interact with their engine. We pride ourselves on helping our customers
understand as much as possible about their turbo or supercharger problem
and hopefully help the customer spend only what they need to.
Some Facts about Turbos
1. a turbo is an exhaust driven air compressor
2. a turbo does NOT recycle the exhaust gas and feed it back to the intake
3. turbos require fresh clean oil as soon as the engine is running using
synthetic oil does not mean there will be no coking after shut down
4. the wastegate uses boost not vacuum to operate
Preventive Maintenance for your Turbos
1. frequent oil changes, even with synthetic oil
2. allow the engine to reach operating temperature before getting into boost
conditions
3. allow engine to idle for 45 seconds or more before shut-down
Signs of Imminent Turbo Failure
1. your maximum boost level fluctuates
2. the regular "whine" from the turbo has become louder or has disappeared
3. your maximum boost level has dropped off significantly or is non-existent
4. your oil consumption is increasing in conjunction with increasing
quantities of light colored smoke from the tailpipe
5. your turbo produces no boost at all
